Garden Club Member Information
Thank you for your interest in the Central School Gardeners. Through fun and interactive club meetings, guest speakers, and the preparing and planting of an organic kitchen garden on the school property, our hope is that kids will develop an understanding of and appreciation for how food is grown (seed to table) as they learn valuable sustainability and self-sufficiency skills which will last them a lifetime.
The Central School Gardeners will meet on the second Wednesday of each month from 3:30 to 4:30pm. Afternoon kindergarten students and students in grades 1-3 will stay after school and will be called to the art room where they will met by garden club committee members and volunteers. Please send a note to your child’s teacher on meeting days giving permission for your child to stay after school for the meeting. Parents of morning kindergarten students will need to bring their children in through the front door and walk them down to the art room. Pick-up at the end of the meetings will be around the back of the school, either outside or in the art room via the passage way door (please do not go through the cafeteria). The dates are: October 13th, November 10th, January 12th, February 9th, March 9th*, April 13th, May 11th, and June 8th. There will not be a meeting in December. (*March 9th is an early release day for parent/teacher conferences – this date may change.)
Parents and caregivers are always welcome; however, anyone who plans to attend meetings on a regular basis must have a current CORI on file with the school office. Forms can be picked up in the Central School main office and take just a moment to complete. If you are not sure if your CORI is current, please contact Mrs. McStowe at (508) 378-8204.
Please have your child dress appropriately on CSG meeting days. The kids will be getting dirty, even if the meeting is held inside! We recommend:
- T-shirts, casual pants and sneakers are ideal, but any comfortable clothing and shoes that can get dirty (we can’t stress that enough) are suitable
- A sweatshirt or jacket will also be necessary on chillier days
- Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended to reduce the risk of injury
- On damp days, rain boots and a waterproof coat are a good idea (we will not stay inside if it is only drizzling)
- Garden gloves
- Hats
We will have a snack time at the beginning of each meeting. A nutritious snack and drink–local and in season when possible–will be provided. To be fair to everyone, we do not allow outside snacks or drinks (with the exception of water) to be consumed during club meetings. We are very careful to take all food allergies into consideration when planning the snacks; if you have any concerns, please contact Kate Strassel at k.m.strassel@gmail.com immediately.
We encourage you to visit the CSG blog at http://centralschoolgarden.wordpress.com frequently as we update it often.
Our main form of communication to parents will be via email. If you do not have an email address, please let us know.
As always, if you ever have any questions or suggestions, please contact Kate Strassel at k.m.strassel@gmail.com or (508) 378-6005.
