Our next (and second to last!) Central School Gardeners meeting is this Wednesday, May 26th after school. Please send in a permission note with your child allowing him/her to stay after school for the meeting. We plan to spend the majority of the meeting at the garden site, so the kids are welcome to bring in their small trowels, cultivators, or shovels labeled with their names. Also, please be sure that your child is dressed appropriately for working in the garden. We have had loam as well as a big pile of composted manure delivered to the garden site, and the kids will be helping to move the compost into the raised beds and mixing the loam and compost together – they WILL be getting dirty! We also ask that the kids wear sneakers or other closed-toe shoes to the meetings instead of sandals and flip flops to minimize the risk of injury. The planned snack is local strawberries and local popcorn – yes, local popcorn! – from Hanson Farm in Bridgewater. If you’re interested in volunteering to help with the meeting, please email Kate at k.m.strassel@gmail.com.
Bridgewater Savings Bank has made a very generous of $1,000 to the Central School Gardeners to help with the construction of the garden! Representatives from the bank will be at Wednesday’s meeting around 4:15 to meet the kids and present the garden club with a really big “check”! There will also be photographers on hand to snap some photos. Feel free to come by a bit early to witness the festivities!
The CSG committee members have been very busy since the last garden club meeting. We have finally constructed two raised beds out of redwood lumber (redwood is untreated, yet it is very weather-resistant and durable) purchased with the guidance of David Goldman at Sunnyline Lumber on Route 18. And just last Friday, the East Bridgewater DPW donated lots of loam to fill in the beds, composted cow manure was delivered from a dairy farm on Central Street, and a fence was put up around the garden area. Click here to see pictures of the raised beds and fence!
We are working on creating a schedule for the care of the school garden over the summer. The proposed days and time for the garden care is 6:00pm – 7:00pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from June 21st through September 2nd. Our goal is to have at least one or two families sign up for each day to ensure that the watering, weeding and harvesting is kept up. At least one garden club committee member will be present during each time slot as well. Whether you are available weekly, once a month, or even just for one day, we welcome any and all volunteers! Also, if you know of a Central School student who was unable to participate in the garden club during the school year and would like to help out over the summer, please have them contact Kate Strassel at k.m.strassel@gmail.com. We will have a list available for the summer garden care sign-up at the meeting on Wednesday. We are also looking into an online sign-up program similar to the one used for parent conference sign-ups at the middle school; we will forward more information on that as it becomes available.
Lastly, the CSG is planning a fundraising yard sale at the Central School on Saturday, June 12th. If you have items taking up space in your closets, basement, garage or attic, we will take them! Items will be dropped off in the cafeteria on Friday, June 11th. The exact times for both the drop-off and the sale are being finalized – we will send along more information as soon as we have it. We will also be looking for volunteers to help organize and price items on Friday night and to help with the selling on Saturday; if you would be interested in helping out on either day, please contact Susan Levasseur at s.levasseur@comcast.net.
See you on Wednesday!
