The next meeting of the Central School Gardeners will be this Wednesday, April 25th. This is the makeup meeting for April 11th. Our opening activity will be to plant fast-growing grass in baskets or containers – they make a great spring decoration! Please have your child bring a small basket, bucket, or other suitable container for the project. After snack and the grass project, we will be moving outside to the garden to do some more planting and cleaning up of the garden. Please remember to send a permission slip with your child on Wednesday allowing him/her to stay after school for the meeting. Dismissal will be at 4:30pm from the garden site.

Happy New Year to all!

The next CSG garden club meeting will be on Wednesday, January 11th 2012 right after school in the art room. Please remember to send a permission note to your child’s teacher allowing him/her to stay after school for the meeting. Dismissal will be at 4:30 from the art room – please park at the back of the school near the playground and enter through the door next to the first grade classrooms (please do not go through the cafeteria). If your child will be unable to attend the meeting, please let Kate Strassel know at k.m.strassel@gmail.com.

In the case of forecasted inclement weather, please be sure to check your email and the blog the evening before the meeting. A decision will be made by 7pm on Tuesday, January 10th on whether the meeting will be held. If the meeting is postponed due to the weather, the meeting will be held the following Wednesday (January 18th).

Our project for the January meeting will be forcing paperwhites! Please have your child bring in a clean glass jar (with the label removed) for this project. The opening of the jar needs to be at least 2 1/2 inches in diameter in order to accommodate the bulbs. Please let Kate know if you have any questions.

Lastly, we are always in need of volunteers to help our meetings run smoothly, especially when we are indoors for the entire meeting. If you are able to help out with January’s meeting, please contact Kate at k.m.strassel@gmail.com.

See you next week!

Join us at the beautiful Soule Homestead on Saturday, May 14th 2011 for a “Get to the Root of it” workshop from 1:30 to 3pm! The cost of $6 per student will be paid for by the CSG for garden club members. The admission for adults is $2; all participants must be accompanied by an adult. For siblings and those students not in the garden club, the cost is $6 per child. There WILL be a Central School Gardeners garden club meeting–rain or shine–this Wednesday, April 13th 2011. There will not be a rain date for this meeting. Our original plan had been to spend a good portion of the meeting outside, but between the “live” Easter basket activity we have planned and the seedlings that need to be started inside, we will have plenty to keep us busy indoors! We will meet in the art room after school as usual. Dismissal will be from the art room at 4:30.

A note to parents: Even though we will be indoors, we will be working with soil and water during the meeting, so it is very likely the kids will get dirty. Since Wednesday is picture day, we highly suggest that you send in an apron or old tee shirt that can be put on over your child’s school clothes.

If you have any questions, please email Kate Strassel at k.m.strassel@gmail.com.

See you tomorrow!

The next Central School Gardeners’ garden club meeting will be Wednesday, April 13th after school. We will be spending half of the meeting outside in the garden. Should the meeting need to be postponed to the rain date (April 27th) due to inclement weather, a notice will be posted on the blog the night before by 7pm. It is necessary to make the decision on the evening prior to the meeting in order to avoid confusion at dismissal time on Wednesday. Please be sure to check here on Tuesday evening for announcements. If there is no announcement, then the meeting is on as scheduled.

We will also be creating “live” Easter baskets at the beginning of our meeting! To do this, we will need each member to bring in a small basket (an Easter basket is one example, but it can be any type of small basket) lined with aluminum foil (to prevent leaking when the seed/grass is watered) like so:

Please label the underside of your child’s basket with his/her name. We will be providing the soil and the grass seed as well as directions on how to care for the grass before and after the seed sprouts.

Here’s what the basket will look like after just a few days:

The grass can be trimmed or left as is. We think the kids will get a kick out of leaving out a basket with real grass for the Easter bunny to fill!

Since we will also be heading out to the garden, please have your child wear sneakers or boots and clothing that can get dirty. Also, don’t forget to send in a note to your child’s teacher giving permission to stay after school for the meeting.

See you next week!

CSG members checking out the garden at our first meeting of the year.

The kids were busy from the moment they arrived in the art room until the moment their parents picked them up at the garden. After a snack of local apple cider and sunflower-oatmeal cookies, the club headed outside to the garden where we dug potatoes, harvested tomatoes, collected sunflower and bean seeds and started our compost heap by adding some of the tomato plants to our straw bale composter. It was so wonderful to see the excitement on the kids’ faces each time a potato was unearthed (a video was taken of the potato digging–we hope to be able to share it with everyone soon) and to listen to the conversations about the garden between members. We’re already looking forward to our next meeting in November!

Be sure to check out our Pictures page for lots more photos from our first meeting of the year!
